I met Janice in a nursing care home. We talked briefly every week for a few years. Health issues and medications made conversation challenging, but she loved to hear about what was going on in the world. When I tried to gently shift the conversation to spiritual matters, she would stop talking and just stare at me. I felt that our time together was blocked due to the wall that she put up. I will admit there were times when I wanted to give up, but that is not an option I choose.
As it turned out, she had not put up a wall, but had been listening. One day I was led to read Romans 10:9, “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Janice said, “Jesus is my Lord and I am going to live with Him forever.” That afternoon we shared so much joy!
The next day when I stopped by her room the staff told me that she had died during the night. Although I was startled and saddened, I am so grateful to Jesus for the overwhelming joy of knowing that she left this earth with the promise of eternal life, which far outweighed the loss. ~ Elaine Edkin
